REFLECTIONS ON STEVE PARK

It's been very interesting to me watching the slow emergence of Steve Park
in the Banderas Bay music scene. He's now establishing himself as a major
figure, a real talent that all should get to know.

As many of you know, he was instrumental in the success of the
BOTTOMFEEDERS, that ridiculously popular band out in La Cruz. That's
how I first met him. But frankly, in that setting, it was impossible to see just
how talented he is as a musician.

Now that's he's playing mostly with the Redneck Mothers, he's getting more
attention. But again, the band's rather raucous crowd and its rollicking brand
of country-rock, mask his true talent.

Then, one night at Que Pasa a couple months ago, I heard Steve perform
some acoustic duets with keyboardist Trish, who tossed in some vocal
harmonies as well. Finally, I actually LISTENED to some
of his original songs. These weren't the saucy Kock-offs based on
someone's recognizable hit song that I've usually associated with
Steve. These songs had remarkably sensitive, insightful lyrics and
beautiful melody lines. Frankly, I was totally surprised and caught
off guard. HERE'S A MAJOR TALENT, I realized -- and very few people
in Vallarta really get a chance to see it through the clamor of
Redneck Mother's performances.

With encouragement,.. Steve is now beginning to
put his original songs onto CD. I prefer the one that is more quiet
and introspective: it really shows off his material very well. I
can't wait to get back to PV to hear his next CD.

In the meantime, I really encourage Vallarta residents and music fans to pick
up some CD's. They are more-or-less "home produced,"
but with today's technology, the results are just fine.
